Violet Green's Waving Not Drowning Sock Pattern for 4ply wool, in 3 sizes:
sock knitting kit Waving Not Drowning sock pattern belongs to Violet Green; please don't copy, but you're welcome to link to this page if you want to.

Please click here for Wools suitable for this pattern, and here to see Waving Harder Still Not Drowning socks!

Sizes: child (medium adult foot, wide adult foot)

To make Waving Not Drowning socks:

Cast on 48 (60, 72) stitches, and arrange them over 3 double pointed 2.5mm needles. Working in the round, continue as follows:

Purl one round.

Then continue in waving not drowning pattern, as follows:

The wavy pattern:

  1. Round 1 - Knit 1 round.
  2. Round 2 - **Knit 2 together, twice; Bring yarn forward and knit 1 stitch (making a stitch), 4 times; Knit 2 together, twice; **

    Repeat from ** to ** 3 (4, 5) more times.

  3. Round 3 - Knit 1 round.
  4. Round 4 - Knit 1 round.
Repeat these 4 rounds 15 times, or until the cuff of the sock is the size you want it to be, stopping 0 (3, 0) stitches before the marker. Then turn.

Divide for the heel flap:

  1. Having turned (see instruction above)
  2. Slip 1 stitch, purl 23 (29, 35) then turn;
  3. Slip 1 stitch, knit 23 (29, 35) then turn;
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for 11 (14, 17) more times, until the heel flap has 24 (30, 36) rows.

Shape the heel:

Continuing on the heel flap,

  1. Slip 1 stitch, purl 13, (16, 19) purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  2. Slip 1 stitch, knit 5, S2K2tog (see Glossary at bottom), knit 1, then turn;
  3. Slip 1 stitch, purl 6, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
  4. Slip 1 stitch, knit 7, S2K2tog, knit 1, then turn;
  5. Slip 1 stitch, purl 8, purl 2 together, purl 1, then turn;
Continue in this way until you have picked up all the stitches from the heel flap; you should have 15 (18, 21) stitches left on the heel flap.

Shape the heel gusset:

  1. Pick up 12 (15, 18) stitches knitwise down side 1 of the heel flap. Place a marker.
  2. Knit across the 24 (30, 36) stitches from the cuff, continuing in the wavy pattern, which will change for the medium size socks from this point on:

    New wavy pattern instructions for Medium size socks only:

    • Round 1 - Knit.
    • Round 2 - Knit 3 stitches; **Knit 2 together, twice; Bring yarn forward and knit 1 stitch (making a stitch), 4 times; Knit 2 together, twice; ** Repeat from ** to **once, then knit 3 stitches.

    • Round 3 - Knit.
    • Round 4 - Knit.

  3. Place a marker, then pick up 12 (15, 18) stitches knitwise up side 2 of the heel flap.
You should have 63 (78, 93) stitches. Now continue with the following 2 rounds, until 48 (60, 72) stitches remain:
  1. Knit upto 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1. Knit across the wavy patterned area, keeping to the wavy pattern described above (remember the pattern has changed for the medium size socks only), until you reach the marker. Knit 1, S2K2tog, then knit to the end of the round.

  2. Knit a round, keeping to the wavy pattern through the patterned area.
When you have 48 (60, 72) stitches remaining ( 24 (30, 36) in stocking stitch, and 24 (30, 36) in wavy pattern stitch), continue without decreasing until the sock is the length you require, bearing in mind that the toe you knit will be about 4 (5, 6) cm in depth; see the Customized Sock Pattern Generator to find out exactly how many rounds to knit at this point to fit a particular foot size.

Shape the toe:

You will shape the toe by decreasing at both sides of the place where the wavy pattern and the plain knitting meet. Stop the wavy pattern now, and knit all rounds.

  1. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the first marker, then Knit 2 together, then Knit 1.
    Slip the first marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog. Knit up to 3 stitches away from the second marker, then Knit 2 together, Knit 1.
    Slip the second marker, then Knit 1, then S2K2tog.
    Knit to the end of the round.

  2. Knit a round.
Repeat these 2 rows until 18 (24, 30) stitches remain. Arrange these 18 (24, 30) stitches into 2 sets of 9 (12, 15) , so that they will lie flat, ensuring that the hanging thread is at the back-right hand side, then graft the stitches together.

Grafting:
Put the sewing needle in the first stitch of the front knitting needle purlways and pull the yarn all the way through. Do not drop the st off the knitting needle.
Next put the sewing needle into the first st of the back knitting needle knitways and pull all the way through. Again, do not drop the st off the knitting needle.

** Now put the sewing needle into the first st of the front knitting needle knitways and pull the yarn all the way through. Drop the st off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the next st on the front knitting needle and pull through. Do not drop the st off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle purlways into the first st on the back knitting needle and pull through. Drop the st off the knitting needle.
Put the sewing needle into the next st on the back knitting needle knitways and pull through. Do not drop the st off the knitting needle.
Rep from ** to the end of the row, then fasten off the thread.

Ready to wear!

Glossary:

S2K2tog = Slip 2 stitches knitways from the left needle onto the right needle, then knit 2 together on the right needle.
