Violet Green ~ About Our Yarns
  1. Yarn types

    • Lace weight yarns:
      • Plato Merino 2ply Laceweight yarn is a soft 2ply lace yarn made from 100% Merino. There are 725m/798 yards per 100g. Gentle wash at 30 degrees.
      • Mulberry Merino 2ply Laceweight yarn is a soft and smooth 2ply lace yarn made from 70% Ultrafine Merino and 30% Mulberry Silk. It gives stitches great definition, has a soft sheen, and drapes well too. There are 725m/798 yards per 100g. Gentle wash at 30 degrees.

    • Sock weight yarns:
      • Socrates Merino is a soft, 100% Merino superwash yarn. There are 330m/360 yards per 100g, which is enough for an adult pair of socks. This yarn is machine washable at 40 degrees, but we recommend a cool gentle wash for hand-dyed yarns.
      • Socrates Merino SuperSock is a soft, 80% Merino 20% nylon superwash yarn; the nylon has been added for strength and elasticity. There are330m/360 yards per 100g, which is enough for an adult pair of socks. This yarn is machine washable at 40 degrees, but we recommend a cool gentle wash for hand-dyed yarns.
      • Stellar Luxury Sock Yarn is a very soft, very smooth yarn with a subtle sheen. It is made from 60% superfine merino, 15% bamboo, 10% Silk and 15% nylon. There are350m/380 yards per 100g, which is enough for an adult pair of socks. Gentle wash at 30 degrees.
      • VG Solemate Merino 4ply is a soft 75% Merino 25% Nylon superwash yarn. There are 400m/437 yards per 100g. This yarn is machine washable at 40 degrees, but we recommend a cool gentle wash for hand-dyed yarns.
      • VG SuperSock is a 75% Superwash Wool and 25% nylon 4ply yarn. There are 400m/440 yards per 100g, which is plenty for an adult pair of socks. This yarn is machine washable at 40 degrees, but we recommend a cool gentle wash for hand-dyed yarns.
      • Utopia is a high-twist yarn made from 100% superwash Merino. The high twist imparts strength an durability. There are330m/360 yards per 125g, which is enough for an adult pair of socks. This yarn is machine washable at 40 degrees, but we recommend a cool gentle wash for hand-dyed yarns.
      • Lang, Opal and Trekking 4ply yarns are superwash yarns made from 75% New Wool 25% Nylon. Machine washable at 40 degrees.
      • Cashmere/Silk 4ply is a soft and silky yarn made from 55% Silk 45% and Cashmere. There are 183m/200 yards per 55g. Gentle wash at 30 degrees.

    • Double knitting weight yarns:
      • Cascade 220, a great knitting and felting wool, is made from 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. There are 200m/220 yards per 100g. Gentle wash at 30 degrees, unless you are felting.

    • Aran/worsted weight yarns:
      • Bluefaced Leicester Aran is another great knitting and felting wool. Made from 100% Bluefaced Leicester, a soft, lustre yarn. There are 165m/181 yards per 100g. Gentle wash at 30 degrees.

  2. Consistency of Hand-Dyed Skeins
Because of the nature of hand-dyeing, the distrubtion of colours within any skein is likely to vary from lot to lot. If more than one skein of a yarn is ordered in one purchase, we will always ensure that all of the skeins are from the same lot, so that the variation will be minimal.

  3. Mixing Skeins Together
Skeins from the same dye lot will have substantially the same dye distribution, but they will vary slightly. For this reason, we recommend that where you are using more than one hand-dyed skein of the same shade for a project, you mix the skeins in together as you knit: like knitting stripes with the same colour. Or, if you want to have some variation over the project, don't bother!

  4. Colour-fastness of hand-dyed wools
Although we take great care to set the dye colour, and we rinse all dyed yarns until the water runs clear, we do recommend that you gentle cool wash hand-dyed yarns for the best results, and wash separately until you are happy that all possible dye residue has been removed.
