Needs: A 100g hank of double knitting weight wool and a set of 4mm double pointed needles, or a 40 cm circumference, 4mm circular needle.
 To make the hat:First, measure the circumference of the head you want to knit for. The following is a rough guide to sizes: Size 1: 45 cm circumference, suitable for small child
Size 2: 51.5 cm circumference, suitable for medium adult or large child
Size 3: 58 cm circumference, suitable for large adult
Cast on 86 (102, 118) stitches over three 4mm double pointed needles, or a 40 cm circumference, 4mm circular needle.
Working in the round, work knit 1 purl 1 rib for 6 rows. Continuing in stocking stitch (knit every round), increase 10 stitches approximately evenly over the next round. You should now have 96 (112, 128) stitches.
Continue until work measures 16 (21, 23) cms in depth, or until you achieve the hat depth you want.
Place a marker.
**Knit 2 stitches, then knit 2 together **; repeat from ** to ** until you reach the marker. You should now have 72 (84, 96) stitches.
Knit 1 round.
**Knit 1 stitch, then knit 2 together **; repeat from ** to ** until you reach the marker. You should now have 48 (56, 64) stitches.
Knit 1 round.
**Knit 2 stitches together **; repeat from ** to ** until you reach the marker. You should now have 24 (28, 32) stitches.
**Knit 2 stitches together **; repeat from ** to ** until you reach the marker. You should now have 12 (14 16) stitches.
Break the yarn with enough left to thread back through the remaining stitches, pull together, and secure.
Ready to wear!
